DESTINATION KYNETON BEGAN IN MAY, 2015
YOUR ROOM IS CALLED HARRY’S.
Kyneton is the hub of the Macedon Ranges.
Our self-contained business and holiday accommodation is in the previous rabbit trappers home, built in the Depression era of the 1930’s. The property comes with genuine history, as does the town. This is where Harry (No Frills) Espetito Portelli lived from 1944 after he escaped Europe and the second world war. He came to Kyneton and with his Indian motorbike and sidecar, started his one man band rabbit processing business in the triple red brick shop/factory space out the front.
25 years later, Harry, who never married, had 20 men working here and he owned half of Kyneton.
Harry got chest pains when fishing with his brother. He drove himself in his black Ford Customline down to Sunshine Hospital and died there of a heart attack in the late 1960’s. In the big corrugated iron freezer shed Harry built here, the clean up found three hundred thousand frozen pounds stashed inside it.
Harry’s humble residence at the rear has come a long way since those days.
Behind the modest old corrugated iron exterior, we have devoted much time and consideration to blending in creature comforts, original artwork, comfortable bedding, WiFi and all the little details that make up this cosy, insulated interior to make your stay a happy one. It has real wood furniture. Hardwood planks were discovered behind the old ceiling plaster. We recycled this timber into the six inch wide, one inch thick polished redgum flooring.
You are surrounded by marvelous Australian history, perfectly and discretely located right in the middle of Kyneton and over the road from the famous Piper Street with its award-winning restaurants, wines, cafes, galleries, markets and more.
Leave the car in our carpark and walk the town from our central location and see the sights.
Destination Kyneton is around an hour’s drive from Melbourne. Or catch the country train on the Bendigo line from Southern Cross Station.
